Dr. Hal Puthoff

Biography & Timeline

Dr. Hal Puthoff is a quantum physicist and engineer whose career has spanned over five decades, bridging highly classified defense intelligence programs, exotic propulsion physics, and the study of human consciousness. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1967.

Early Government Work and SRI International (1970s-1985)

Puthoff's initial entry into government intelligence began as a naval intelligence officer at the National Security Agency (NSA) at Fort Meade, where he worked on optical computing. While subsequently working at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), the CIA approached him to study exotic phenomena. In the early 1970s, Puthoff and Russell Targ co-founded the remote viewing program at SRI, which investigated human consciousness abilities. This program successfully operated for over two decades with funding from the CIA, DIA, and various Army and Navy intelligence groups.

Founding IASA and EarthTech (1984-1991)

By the mid-1980s Puthoff had left SRI, backed by funding from Bill Church (Church's Fried Chicken heir).

[!warning] Correction (2026-08-30) This section previously stated that Dr. Kit Green and Jacques Vallee urged Puthoff to leave SRI in 1984. Research could not support it. The Bill Church passage in Vallee's Forbidden Science sits in Vol. II, around March 1973, and the "leaving SRI" voice in it is Vallee himself weighing whether to quit — not Green urging Puthoff out. No passage was found in which Green urges the departure. See the Kit Green research report.

Backed by Church's funding, Puthoff founded the Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin (IASA) in 1985. In 1991, this institute was incorporated under EarthTech International, where Puthoff continues as President and CEO, focusing on quantum vacuum, zero-point energy, space-time metric engineering, and interstellar flight science.

The Invisible College and ATP Working Group (1985)

In 1985, Puthoff was a foundational member of the Advanced Theoretical Physics (ATP) working group, an invitation-only coalition spearheaded by Col. John Alexander. Meeting in a secure BDM Corp SCIF, Puthoff presented how remote viewing could be used to track or interface with UAPs. He remained vital to the "Invisible College" — the decentralized network of scientists studying UAP behind the scenes.

NIDS, AAWSAP, and the 38 DIRD Papers (1995-2012)

Puthoff served on the Science Advisory Board of Robert Bigelow's National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS, 1995-2004), eventually becoming its final chairman. When the DIA funded the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program (AAWSAP, 2008-2012), Puthoff was hired as senior advisor and subcontractor through Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS). Puthoff commissioned 38 Defense Intelligence Reference Documents (DIRDs) from leading global scientists, instructing them to forecast their aerospace fields to 2050. He personally authored a DIRD on Space-Time Metric Engineering.

Modern Disclosure Era (2017-Present)

Puthoff continued as AAWSAP transitioned to Luis Elizondo's AATIP. In 2017, Puthoff co-founded To The Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences (TTSA) alongside Elizondo, Christopher Mellon, and Tom DeLonge. Leveraging his background, Puthoff has provided classified UAP briefings to the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees. In recent years, he has advocated for studying crashed UAP metamaterials and authored theoretical frameworks like the "Ultraterrestrial Hypothesis" to explain non-human intelligence behind them.
