SRI International

SRI International, also called the Stanford Research Institute, is a research organization. Two separate parts of it matter here, and they are often confused.

One is the remote-viewing program that Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ began in the early 1970s (SRI's remote viewing program). Funding is said to have come from the CIA, the DIA and Army and Navy intelligence groups. Around 1991 contract research on the government's remote-viewing work moved from SRI to SAIC. Edwin May worked at SRI and later at SAIC. Puthoff left SRI in the mid-1980s.

The other is the Augmentation Research Center, Douglas Engelbart's group in mainstream computing research. Jacques Vallee was a senior research engineer there in 1971 and 1972. His post is often conflated with the remote-viewing program, but they were different units. Vallee was consulted intermittently on classified remote-viewing research through his friendships with Puthoff and Kit Green, who obtained a temporary clearance for him in 1974. That was consultation, not membership.
