1933 Magenta Crash (Cabinet RS/33)
The 1933 Magenta Crash is an alleged UFO crash-retrieval said to have occurred on 13 June 1933 near Magenta, about 25 km west of Milan in Lombardy, Fascist Italy. According to documents that surfaced anonymously in the 1990s, a disc- or bell-shaped craft came down; Benito Mussolini's regime allegedly recovered it, stored the wreckage in SIAI-Marchetti hangars at Vergiate, and created a secret study commission — Cabinet RS/33 (Gabinetto RS/33) — reportedly under the scientific direction of Nobel laureate Guglielmo Marconi [S1][S2].
No independent evidence establishes that this event occurred. The entire narrative rests on documents of unverified provenance, promoted by the Italian ufologists Roberto Pinotti and Alfredo Lissoni of the Centro Ufologico Nazionale (CUN) (CUN); no state archive, historian, or forensic body has ever corroborated Cabinet RS/33's existence [S3][S4]. Every source surfaced in this research is a secondary UFO-community or popular-press outlet. The case is important less as evidence of a 1933 crash than as a well-documented study in how an anonymous document dump was amplified, embellished over decades, and eventually folded into the modern U.S. disclosure narrative — one strand of the broader crash retrieval program mythos.
The Alleged Event
On 13 June 1933 a "strange, non-terrestrial craft adorned with bizarre symbols" reportedly crashed near Magenta; on hearing the news Mussolini is said to have ordered a military retrieval [S2]. The wreckage was allegedly hidden at the SIAI-Marchetti facility at Vergiate near Milan — a building later destroyed by a 1940 fire of undetermined cause, which proponents cite as convenient evidence-destruction (an inference, not established) [S1][S2]. Two 1933 telegrams are repeatedly presented as the core evidence: one demanding "absolute silence" over the "alleged landing on national soil of unknown aircraft," the other threatening journalists with arrest for reporting on it — both supposedly issued on Mussolini's personal orders [S2]. A far more sensational version (occupants with "DNA-like structures," involvement of Pope Pius XI, an SS/Luftwaffe raid on the Vergiate bunker) appears only in low-reliability outlets and is later embellishment, flagged speculative throughout [S5].
Cabinet RS/33 and the Documents
Cabinet RS/33 (Gabinetto RS/33) ("Gabinetto RS/33," glossed as Ricerche Speciali / Special Research, "33" for 1933) is the alleged secret Fascist body created to study the wreckage, reportedly linked to the secret police OVRA and the regime's news agency Agenzia Stefani [S1][S2]. Its existence is attested by no independent archive — "other researchers have found no evidence of its existence so far" [S3]. The documents' traceable history begins in early 1996, when a source later self-identified only as "Mr. X" mailed original and photocopied 1930s-era documents to Italian outlets (e.g. Il Resto del Carlino, a 34-page dossier annotated "SAY NOTHING TO IL DUCE") and to Roberto Pinotti [S2][S6]. Between 1996 and 2000, Roberto Pinotti and Alfredo Lissoni accumulated a corpus said to total ~18 documents — handwritten notes and telegrams on Senato del Regno letterhead, a disc sketch, a secrecy order, and a claimed forensic report. They went public at an international UFO symposium in San Marino in 2000 and published Mussolini e gli UFO (Idea Libri, 2001) [S7]. The material was mostly ignored or discarded by Italian media on first receipt [S4].
Authenticity Debate and Modern Revival
The skeptical case is substantially better documented than the case for authenticity. A detailed Metabunk analysis (crediting Brian Dunning's Skeptoid and researcher Douglas Johnson) traced the modern, embellished version — the bell / Die Glocke craft shape, the Pope's "backchanneling," and the U.S. recovery — not to the 1996 documents but to letters written in the 2000s–2010s by William "Billy" Brophy Jr., retelling stories his father allegedly told him in the 1970s after watching the TV show In Search Of, later cross-pollinated with Nazi "Die Glocke" mythology and Jacques Vallee's Trinity research [S4]. Claimed forensic authentication of the papers has never had its full report released for independent verification [S3]. The case re-entered mass awareness through David Grusch's 2023 congressional testimony, which described a "bell-like craft" recovered by Mussolini's government in 1933, moved to a secure airbase, and procured by the U.S. in 1944–45 "with the assistance of the Vatican and the Five Eyes alliance" [S8]. Skeptic Mick West characterized Grusch's account as "essentially part of UFO mythology," emphasizing it is entirely secondhand [S9]. Grusch's retelling closely tracks the publicly traceable embellished version rather than diverging from it in ways that would suggest independent classified corroboration.
