Bigelow Aerospace
Bigelow Aerospace was an American space technology company manufacturing expandable space station modules. Under Robert Bigelow's direction, the company secured the primary defense contract to execute research for the DIA's AAWSAP program. The company built specialized SCIFs designed to receive and analyze exotic metamaterials from Lockheed Martin. After the planned technology transfer was blocked, Bigelow shifted to theoretical aerospace reporting instead of physical material science.
[!note] Correction — added 2026-09-27 The prime AAWSAP contractor was the subsidiary Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS), under contract HHM402-08-C-0072 ($21,948,810, awarded 22 Sep 2008). The claim that the company "built specialized SCIFs designed to receive and analyze exotic metamaterials from Lockheed Martin" is a lore claim; the contract's first-year line items contain no facility construction. The documented tie between Bigelow Aerospace and Lockheed Martin is commercial: a 2006 agreement to study human-rating the Atlas V rocket. See AAWSAP and the research report.
