Dr. J Allen Hynek
Dr. J. Allen Hynek was the Harvard/Smithsonian astronomer whose parallel appointments in the late 1950s are the sole documented bridge between civilian satellite science and the Air Force's UFO program. In 1956 he joined Fred Whipple at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory to direct the satellite-tracking network of Operation Moonwatch (c. 1956–1960). [S1][S2] Across the same period he served as the U.S. Air Force's scientific consultant on UFO reports — a role spanning Project Sign, Grudge, and Project Blue Book. [S2][S3] Initially a skeptic, he later became the most prominent scientific voice arguing the phenomenon deserved serious study, coining the "close encounter" classification and founding the Center for UFO Studies. [S3]
