Control System Hypothesis

The control system hypothesis is Jacques Vallee's proposal that UFOs may act as a feedback mechanism on human belief. It is frequently retold as a settled claim of deliberate manipulation by hidden intelligences. His own texts are more careful, and they are not the same claim as John Mack's transformation thesis.

What Vallee wrote

The earliest wording found is in The Invisible College (1975): "I propose to examine the hypothesis that UFOs may constitute a control system ... a process not unlike that of a thermostat in a house," and "I propose the hypothesis that there is a control system for human consciousness" [S1]. He leaves the origin open ("natural or spontaneous ... or if it is artificial in nature, and under the power of some superhuman will"), says the controlled variable is "human belief," and disclaims a jailer model [S1]. Passport to Magonia (1969) does not use the phrase; it argues the saucer myth follows the fairy-faith pattern [S2]. Messengers of Deception (1979) extends the idea through cults and contactees [S3]. Dimensions (1988) adds "spiritual control system for human consciousness" [S4].

How it differs from its neighbours

Jung held that saucers were psychic projections, "occasioned, not caused," by a possibly real object, and treated the saucer as a symbol of wholeness rather than an acting intelligence; he kept the radar caveat [S5]. Hynek posed the psychological or paranormal reading as questions, not assertions, and the words "paraphysical" and "M&M technology" were not found in his own books [S6]. Mack considered Jung and declined the frame, and the phrase "control system" does not appear in his Abduction [S7].

The core difference is the object. Vallee's frame is a function of the phenomenon, which regulates belief for unknown and possibly deceptive ends. Mack's frame is an outcome for experiencers, from beings with intentions of their own. They share a non-physical layer and little else. No source was found in which Vallee equates them, and no Vallee statement about Mack was found; his journals in Forbidden Science were not opened, so that is a gap.
