Electronic Systems Center

The Electronic Systems Center (ESC) was the Air Force Materiel Command center at Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts, responsible for command, control, communications and intelligence systems acquisition. It was one of six organizations whose missions were consolidated into the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center when AFMC collapsed from twelve centers to five in 2012 [S1].

ESC matters to this graph as the likely origin of AFLCMC's Hanscom-based contracting relationship with MITRE Corporation and MITRE National Security Engineering Center. MITRE was founded out of MIT Lincoln Laboratory work for the Air Force, and its national security FFRDC contract is administered today by AFLCMC at Hanscom — the base where ESC sat. No source located in research confirms ESC held that contracting role before 2012, so the continuity is a reasonable inference rather than an established fact.
