Budd Hopkins

Budd Hopkins founded the Intruders Foundation in 1989 and was, with David Jacobs, the main voice for the view that abduction is a physical and exploitative program, in contrast to John Mack's transformational reading [S1]. Col. John Alexander describes him as an artist-turned-hypnotist [S3]. He is the person who first convinced Mack the accounts deserved serious study [S1].

His position

Hopkins described himself in 1998 as "a pragmatic investigator" unable "to reject the possibility that UFOs ... do exist," and said abductees "present puzzling scars and other marks on their bodies" [S2]. The Crimson reporter wrote that he regards the activity as "more physical and self-serving," and quoted him on the aliens: "I don't like their bedside manner" [S1]. His earlier books were not retrieved, so his position is sourced only from the late 1990s.

With Mack

The two agreed that aliens abduct people and disagreed over motives; their March 1997 Harvard dialogue before about 700 people was their first joint public discussion [S1]. The 1992 MIT conference had already made the split public [S4]. No contact between Hopkins and Alexander appears in Alexander's 2011 book, which is a retrieved negative for that one text only [S3].
