MIT Abduction Study Conference (1992)
The MIT Abduction Study Conference ran 13-17 June 1992 and brought researchers, clinicians and experiencers together to compare abduction accounts. John Mack and Dave Pritchard organized it. It was held on the MIT campus but not sponsored by MIT: Col. John Alexander says everyone attending signed a statement saying so [S2]. The invisible-college tag marks it as researchers working outside official channels, which is an editorial reading.
Why it matters
The proceedings were published as Alien Discussions (North Cambridge Press, 1994, 684 pages), edited by Andrea and David Pritchard, Mack, Pam Kasey and Claudia Yapp [S1]. A reviewer wrote that the conference "split the public unity of American researchers" into two schools. He placed Hopkins and Jacobs in the "Dark Marauders" view and Mack in a "positively transformational" one [S1]. That is the split between a physical, threatening reading and a consciousness-based one.
Alexander's account
Alexander says he met Mack here and "spoke immediately following John's transformative presentation," on near-death experiences and abduction, and that contact continued for years [S2]. It is his self-report, and the proceedings' speaker list was not checked, so his attendance rests on his own statement. The date of 1992 comes from matching his description to the reviewer's.
