Project Sign
First official U.S. Air Force investigation into UFO sightings (1948-1949). The project produced the "Estimate of the Situation" memo, which concluded that some UFOs were of "interplanetary origin." However, this conclusion was rejected by higher-ups, and General Hoyt Vandenberg allegedly ordered the document to be destroyed.
