Project Magnet
Project Magnet was the study Wilbert Smith proposed in his memo of 21 November 1950. Commander C.P. Edwards, Deputy Minister of Transport for Air Services, approved it on 2 December 1950. Smith was engineer-in-charge, with two engineers and two technicians working part-time [S1]. Smith's interim report of 25 June 1953 concluded there was a "substantial probability" that the saucers were real extraterrestrial vehicles [S1]. His own department did not endorse that conclusion, and neither did Project Second Storey. The department announced Magnet's closure on 10 August 1954 [S2]. In 1964 the department told an inquirer it had never "carried out research into" UFOs [S1].
