Area 51
Area 51 is the common name for a highly classified U.S. Air Force installation at Groom Lake in the Nevada desert. Officially part of the Nevada Test and Training Range, it has historically been used to develop and test experimental aircraft including the U-2 reconnaissance plane, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the F-117 stealth fighter.
The site has long been associated with UAP claims. Bob Lazar alleged that the S4 facility - located approximately 15 miles south of the main Groom Lake complex near Papoose Lake - was used to reverse-engineer recovered non-human craft.
The CIA officially acknowledged the facility by name in a 2013 declassified history of the U-2 program.
