Manzano Base

Manzano Base is the nuclear weapons storage complex built into the Manzano Mountains on the southeast side of Kirtland AFB in New Mexico. It began as "Site Able," built by the Army from 1946 and operational in 1950; the Air Force took it over in 1952 and gave it the Manzano name. It operated until a new underground complex was completed in 1990, and the old storage area was deactivated in 1992 [S2]. When Sandia Base, Manzano Base and Kirtland Field were consolidated into a single installation on 1 July 1971, security responsibility for the Manzano Weapons Storage Complex fell to the 1606th Air Base Wing [S1].

Manzano matters to this vault because it is the restricted area named in the documented August 1980 reports. A FOIA-released AFOSI complaint form records three 1608th Security Police Squadron airmen, interviewed separately, each describing a bright light that maneuvered and landed over the Coyote Canyon range inside the weapons storage area on 8 August 1980, with further reports on 9 and 22 August [S3]. What the documents establish is that those reports were made and investigated — not what was seen. See Kirtland AFB and the DOE weapons-lab lane research report for the documented-versus-testimonial breakdown.
