Harvard Medical School Review of John Mack (1994-95)
In 1994-95 Harvard Medical School reviewed the work of John Mack, the psychiatrist whose abduction books had made him the field's most prominent academic. It is often retold as an inquisition that "censured" him. The contemporary reports say otherwise: the school decided not to censure him and gave him a public warning instead. The lane tag marks Mack's side of the story as a researcher working outside official channels; that is an editorial reading, not something the sources state.
What the reports say
Dean Daniel Tosteson appointed a committee chaired by Arnold Relman, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine; Relman says so in his own commentary [S3]. An anonymous participant called it an "ad hoc fact-finding committee," not a disciplinary one [S4]. The stated concerns were whether Mack's work met the school's standards of scholarly investigation and whether he was "exploiting his subjects or exposing them to harm" [S5]. The start is dated May 1994 by Wikipedia and June 1994 by LARB, so only the year is used here.
In August 1995 the Crimson reported that the school "decided not to censure" him, and that Tosteson gave "an unusual public warning" that enthusiasm must not violate faculty academic standards [S1]. The Washington Post said Harvard "will not discipline" him and that Tosteson "reaffirmed Mack's right to study whatever he wishes" [S2].
What it did say about his work
The New York Times had reported that the committee's report was "sharply critical" of him [S5]. Relman says the committee criticised Mack for "not doing any scientific research" and for not being "sufficiently objective and detached" with abductees, while denying any challenge to his right to study abduction; he called the committee's letter "neither punitive nor coercive" [S3][S6]. Advocate and critic meet on one point: Alan Dershowitz, speaking for Mack, welcomed the outcome but called the inquiry itself a mistake, and Relman and the Crimson agree no formal punishment followed [S3].
What cannot be checked
The committee report and the dean's letter were confidential and Harvard would not release the findings. Only draft excerpts leaked in April 1995, through Mack's former lawyer Daniel Sheehan, whom Mack's side called unauthorized [S4]. Harvard's own position is known only as the press quoted it, so it is evidence of what Harvard says, not an independent record. The "censured" version appears in Wikipedia alone among the sources read; a critical report plus a dean's warning is the likeliest origin, which is an inference.
