SOM1-01 Special Operations Manual

SOM1-01, a purported 1954 MJ-12 field manual for the recovery and handling of crashed craft and occupants, is notable for how it was rejected: on 14 March 1999 a statement denouncing it as counterfeit was signed by pro-UFO researchers including Don Berliner — advocates rejecting a document on internal-anachronism grounds, alongside the skeptics [S1].

The central objection is that the manual refers to "Area 51 S-4," a designation not applied to that Nellis parcel until well after the manual's purported date [S1].

It also produced one of the few genuine advocate rebuttals in the MJ-12 literature. Against the claim that its headers were set in Helvetica — a typeface designed in 1957, three years after the manual's date — Robert M. Wood consulted the US Government Printing Office's 1959 Specimens of Type Faces and identified Franklin Gothic and Square Gothic, both predating Helvetica, as closer matches on letter spacing and stroke constancy [S2]. That is a substantive technical counter-argument, whatever one concludes overall.
