William J. Birnes
William J. Birnes ghostwrote The Day After Roswell (1997) and is credited on it as co-author with Philip J. Corso [S1]. He is a provenance node rather than a claimant: he made no first-hand assertion about Roswell, but the claim reached print through him, and the shape of the finished book is partly his.
The pivot happened during production
Birnes worked with Corso for roughly two years. By his own account the project began as a straight military memoir and became a UFO book only after Corso raised the subject in conversation, which Birnes judged compelling enough to carry its own volume [S1].
That account is corroborated from outside the collaboration. Strom Thurmond's office describes being pitched a memoir titled I Walked With Giants with a 21-page outline containing no aliens [S2]. The documentary trail therefore shows the Roswell frame being added late to a conventional manuscript, rather than being the project's premise.
Nothing found in this research establishes how much of the narrative's structure, sequencing, or dramatised scenes originated with Birnes rather than Corso. Several of the book's demonstrable impossibilities are scene-level constructions — a confrontation staged at a building not yet open, involving a man who died four years later by another means in another country — which raises but does not answer the question of authorship at the level of individual episodes [S3].
Birnes later became a prominent figure in UFO media, including as publisher of UFO Magazine.
