Wernher von Braun
Wernher von Braun (1912–1977) was the German-American rocket engineer who led development of the V-2 at Peenemünde and, postwar, directed the U.S. Army rocket team at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) before becoming the first director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. He entered rocketry as the protégé of Hermann Oberth, whose 1923 book inspired him and under whom he worked through the Verein für Raumschiffahrt and later at Peenemünde; von Braun credited Oberth as "the guiding-star of my life" [S1].
