Doug Coe

Doug Coe (died 21 February 2017) was the layman from Oregon who led The Fellowship (The Family) from the late 1960s until his death, having joined in 1958. He turned the group into an "invisible" organization, insisting he led nothing, sitting in on weekly House and Senate prayer groups for fifty years while speaking only once, and declining even to appear on TIME's list of influential evangelicals [S1]. Coe openly cited the cell-organizing methods of Lenin, Hitler, and Mao as models of "total commitment," and cultivated ties to anti-communist strongmen abroad while brokering back-channel diplomacy for U.S. figures [S2].
