Carl Grillmair
Carl Grillmair (1959–2026) was a Research Scientist at Caltech IPAC (Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, Caltech) for approximately 30 years. He was the calibration scientist on NASA WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) and contributed to NEO Surveyor development, the Spitzer Space Telescope infrared instrument teams (IRAC, IRS), and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. He was a co-investigator on the Virtual Planetary Laboratory and had 147 peer-reviewed papers with 3 in preparation at time of death. He discovered dozens of stellar streams in the Milky Way's halo and was first to detect water vapor in an exoplanet atmosphere (2007), earning a 2011 NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.
At the time of his death he was studying comets and asteroids potentially hazardous to Earth — a domain with dual-use overlap with orbital mechanics and sensor physics used to track satellites, hypersonic glide vehicles, and ballistic threats.
Grillmair lived in Llano, CA for dark-sky access, built a private observatory, and was a licensed pilot (gliders and small aircraft).
Murder
December 2025: Freddy Snyder (29, Llano) was arrested on Grillmair's property carrying an unregistered/loaded firearm; charged with felony weapons possession. February 5, 2026: Charges dismissed under California Penal Code 1385 ("in the interest of justice"); Snyder released. February 16, 2026 (11 days later): Snyder returned and shot Grillmair once in the torso on his front porch at ~6:10 a.m. Grillmair was pronounced dead at scene. Snyder was arrested the same morning and charged with murder, carjacking, and first-degree burglary (bail $3.175M). No confirmed prior relationship between Snyder and Grillmair established publicly.
