The Pentagon Disinformation That Fueled America's UFO Mythology (WSJ, 2025)

A Wall Street Journal article by Joel Schectman and Aruna Viswanatha, published 7 June 2025. The print headline was "Pentagon Fueled UFO Mythology, Then Tried Coverup" [S1][S2]. It argued that the US military itself seeded parts of the UFO story. Its examples:

• doctored saucer photographs shown near Area 51 to cover stealth-aircraft testing
• a "Yankee Blue" induction ritual, in which new commanders of classified Air Force programs were told they were joining an alien reverse-engineering program
• a secret EMP test as the cause of the 1967 Malmstrom missile shutdowns [S1][S3][S4]

Sean Kirkpatrick, AARO's first director, is named and quoted: "These episodes reveal how secrecy and misinformation, even when well-intentioned, can spiral into myth" [S3].

Malmstrom witness Robert Salas published a point-by-point rebuttal of the EMP account. Researcher Robert Hastings wrote to the paper's corrections editor on 12 June 2025 [S5][S6]. Part of The New Blue Book.
