Space Nuclear Detonation Detection program
The Space Nuclear Detonation Detection program, managed within NNSA's Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, is responsible for the Global Burst Detector (GBD) sensor payloads hosted on GPS satellites. The GBD system — developed jointly by Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory — has been operational since the Cold War era and provides the United States with a space-based capability to detect nuclear detonations worldwide. A long-standing program management challenge involved securing host-satellite slots for next-generation GBD payloads on GPS III and successor platforms, resolved in part through DOE Space Council coordination and US-Russia space negotiations work recognized in Douglas M. Cotter's 2021 General John A. Gordon Award.
