Federal Bureau of Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation enters this vault chiefly through its investigation of the MJ-12 documents, recorded in file 65-81170, released via the FBI Vault [S1].
The Dallas field office received a purported MJ-12 document from Air Force OSI on 15 September 1988, and a separate nine-page copy came via an anonymous walk-in to the Salt Lake City office in October 1991. After OSI advised on 30 November 1988 that no such committee had ever been authorized or formed, FBI headquarters teletyped Dallas the operative instruction: "THIS ADVISES DALLAS THAT THE DOCUMENT HAS BOGUS AND THE CASE SHOULD BE CLOSED" [S1].
Scope matters when citing this. The Bureau's conclusion attaches to the November 1952 document circulating in 1988 and 1991 — not to the 1947 White Hot Intelligence Estimate, which appears nowhere in the FBI file.
The Bureau's files are also the source of the FBI File on Donald Menzel held elsewhere in this vault.
